Night Trail Run · Raby Castle Stag Night, Staindrop

Run the Raby estate after dark. The parkland, estate tracks and wooded edges around Raby Castle make for proper trail running, completely transformed once the sun drops. Head torches on, beams cutting through the trees and the deer park, the medieval castle floodlit against the night.

Choose Your Distance

Short Route: approx. 5 km

A single loop starting and finishing at the castle, following the parkland carriageways and a wooded section beyond the walls before climbing back. Firm underfoot for the most part with a few rougher sections, picked out by your head torch. Manageable for a runner who trains regularly. Trail shoes are required; road shoes are not suitable.

Long Route: approx. 10 km

The long route completes the short loop before continuing out across the wider estate and back through a second wooded valley. The additional section adds open track running, a longer sustained climb and more time in the dark. Runners should be comfortable with variable underfoot conditions and navigating by head torch. Mandatory kit applies to both routes after dark. See below.

Mandatory Kit: All Runners

  • Head torch, fitted and working, bright enough for technical trail
  • Backup light or spare batteries
  • Windproof or waterproof jacket packable into a vest or pack
  • Minimum 500 ml water carry
  • Mobile phone with emergency contact number saved
  • Small first aid supply (blister kit minimum)

Kit may be checked at registration. Runners without a working head torch and backup light will not be permitted to start.

The location

Raby Castle, Staindrop.

Raby Castle sits in a deer park in the heart of County Durham. The parkland carriageways, estate tracks and wooded edges make for proper trail running, completely transformed once the sun drops and the castle is floodlit against the night.

Start and finish are at the castle itself. This one begins late and finishes in the dark, so plan your evening around it. There is no food or drink on site afterwards. The nearest is Staindrop village, a couple of minutes down the road, though check what is open late before you count on it.

Good questions

FAQ.

Do I need a head torch?

Yes, and a backup light or spare batteries. Both are mandatory for every runner on both distances. Kit may be checked at registration, and you will not be permitted to start without a working head torch and a backup.

A windproof or waterproof jacket packable into a vest or pack, a minimum 500 ml water carry, a mobile phone with an emergency contact saved, and a small first aid supply. Something reflective or hi-vis is recommended.
