Run the trails of an organic farm high in the Browney Valley, with Durham City on the skyline. Broom House Farm sits above the city, with forest tracks and field paths running straight off the yard. Proper off-road running on real farm and woodland ground, back to the coffee shop after.

Choose Your Distance

Short Route: approx. 5 km

A single loop from the farm through the woodland and valley paths, with one steady climb back up to the yard. Mixed underfoot with some rough ground. Manageable for a runner who trains regularly. Trail shoes required.

Long Route: approx. 10 km

The short loop extended further along the Browney Valley, with a longer sustained climb and more open ground before the descent back to the farm. Trail shoes required.

Gravel Rides · Broom House Farm, Witton Gilbert

Ride the farm tracks and valley lanes of the Browney Valley from an organic farm above Durham City. Broom House Farm's forest tracks and the surrounding bridleways and quiet lanes make for rewarding gravel riding, with real gradient and long views back over the city.

Choose Your Distance

Short Route: approx. 50 km

A single loop taking in the valley tracks and quiet lanes with one long climb before the descent back to the farm. A mix of compacted gravel, farm track and short technical sections. Suitable for a gravel or hybrid bike with tyres 35 mm or wider.

Long Route: approx. 100 km

The full day out, extending west into the Durham dales before looping back to Broom House Farm. Longer exposed sections, loose descents and a sustained climb in the final third. A gravel bike with tyres 38 mm or wider is strongly recommended.

Mandatory Kit: All Riders

  • Helmet (mandatory)
  • Spare tube and basic tools, there is no mechanical support on course
  • Mobile phone with emergency contact number saved
  • Windproof or waterproof layer

Is there a finisher T-shirt?

Yes, on both the run and the ride. We order to size, so make sure you pick yours at checkout.

Do I need trail shoes?

Yes, on both run distances. Road shoes are not appropriate.

What bike do I need?

A gravel or hybrid bike in good mechanical order. Helmet is mandatory. Bring a spare tube and basic tools, as there is no mechanical support on course.

What should I wear?

March can be cold and wet. Weather-appropriate layers, and a windproof or waterproof layer for the ride.

Is there food afterwards?

Yes. Hot food and drink at the farm coffee shop after your run or ride.
